Beams and Fire Surrounds
Beams
We can supply beams, structural or aesthetic, any size and in any available Scottish timber. Our beams can be finished and oiled, or if preferred supplied ‘off saw’. Normally delivery time is around 4 weeks from when the deposit is paid. We have a few samples in our showroom to give an idea of colour, finish and scale.
Fireplace mantles are very popular and we have supplied a number to date in Oak, Elm, Ash & Beech, ranging up to 5m x 300mm x 300mm, both square and natural edged. Other popular timbers for beams are Sycamore, Douglas fir, Larch and Scots Pine.
Fire Surrounds
Our fire surrounds were designed with an apprentice in mind, the idea being to keep it simple with a natural organic look. They consist of a kiln dried backing plate which is mortised and tennoned into the legs
and a natural edged mantle screwed on top. We use unseasoned timber for the mantles, legs and corbels as this encourages shakes to form in time which is intrinsic to its design. We also use heavy sections, usually not less than 100mm thick as this tends to keeps its shape as it dries. This also keeps the cost down as seasoned timber this size, is particularly expensive.
As you will no doubt imagine these fire surrounds are heavy and as such must be securely fitted. We have developed a fitting system which makes fitting relatively easy to do, although we do provide a fitting service if required.
Every fire surround we have designed, built and fitted to date, although sharing a similar theme has in fact been quite different. We can of course also build more traditionally styled fire surrounds on request.
There are no short cuts to any place worth going.
